Resource Blog #3: Visions of Education Podcast
Visions of Education Podcast

This resource is one that we have used in one of my other
class and one that I would highly recommend for any teacher in any content area.
Many episodes discuss how to address Social Studies issues as a teacher, but
other topics include those related to social media and social justice, which
are two areas of study that any content area teacher can bring into their teaching
practices. In relation to our topic of testing for the week, Episode 36 of the
Visions of Education podcast discusses high-stakes testing which is relevant to
any teacher of any content area. It discusses the impact of standardized
testing on teachers and how there are so many outside factors that contribute
to the differences in scores among students. Looking globally, on the PISA
international test, the U.S. scored lower than Finland and many Asian countries.
However, part of that is attributed to the fact that Finland has a poverty rate
of 4% while the U.S.’s poverty rate is 22%. Also, many Asian nations have a
different vision of childhood that families in the U.S. Children in many Asian
nations go to school for the required amount of time and then complete
additional, expensive academic affairs outside of the normal school day while
children in America are encouraged to play outside, hang out with friends, or
participate in sports. Another way standardized tests can influence the way
teachers are evaluated is that it can be skewed by the demographic of children
in a teacher’s class. For example, a principal may like a specific teacher and
give her more girls than boys and her tests grades, on average, will be higher
than a class of mostly boys. Many things skew these standardized tests that
people in the education system put so much emphasis on.

Hey Katie!
ReplyDeleteI really liked how in your resource it not only discusses Social Studies curriculum for middle grades but talks about issues prominent in today's society such as "social media and social justice". I think it is important that we discuss these topics in our classroom and I believe Social Studies is a great platform to do so.
